Crisis: 8 convulsions

27/06/11  ||  Daemonomania

Whoop-de-shit, Daemo takes care of the entire Crisis discography. That and a nickel will buy me a quart of steaming hot homeless person fecal matter. Been slow to buy “8” because it seemed a bit hard to find, and because I’m just not as interested in the whole 90’s proto-metalcore scene as I once was (not). But upon placing a large order at Century Media and seeing they were unloading Karyn and the gang’s first album for under three sweet American dollars, the wait was over. Feel free to care at any time.

Given the mist of apathy surrounding this whole doomed enterprise, I’ll make this quick. “8” shows a young and hungry band trying their hand at a relatively new style – there’s refreshing energy coupled with a willingness to experiment throughout. Along with the hardcore/death/thrash/sludge hybrids we have “Gemini,” which could have been a cut off an early Smashing Pumpkins disc. Crazy. Some boredom sets in when they don’t change riffs enough (“Smash…”, “Rotten…”) but rescue usually comes in the form of Karyn’s off-the-wall vocal delivery. And her nutty anti-men, anti-hollering lyrics, including the gem:

And now you’re gonna show me how to get fucked by an asshole

No, no wait, this is better:

I’m a piece of shit and you’re a tired piece of ass

Plenty of fucked shitty assholes to go ‘round. Pretty doubtful that any of you will rush right out to the store and buy this, but hey, it’s cheap as a tired piece of ass these days. Feeling adventurous and yearning for those days of yore when metalcore was not a bore? Then give some Crisis a shot sez I.
